Sifu Erik Brechun 2nd Dan Black Sash

Born and raised in Littleton, Colorado, Erik Brechun began his martial arts studies with Aikido and Kickboxing in junior high school, at age 13. From there he moved to a combined system of Korean Praying Mantis Kung Fu and Hapkido (So Rim Dang Rang Kwan) under grandmaster Chul Woo Jung earning a 2nd degree black belt in the art.

While attending college at the University of Colorado in Boulder he cross trained in sifu Seng Au's school of Hung Gar and Choy Lee Fut under Michael Levin and began teaching the art of mantis Kung Fu. After earning Bachelor of Science degrees in Engineering Physics and Applied Mathematics in 2006, he moved to Newport, Rhode Island and began working as a signal processing engineer supporting the Navy.

Later that same year, he was welcomed into a local American Kenpo school and began training in the art, judging and competing in tournaments as well as continuing to teach the art of mantis Kung Fu. A friend and fellow black belt in Kung Fu from Colorado, Marek Chromik, spent a month at the Wu Dang temple in China and learned their arts directly from the source. Under Marek's instruction, Brechun has been training in the art of Wu Dang Taiji Quan to balance the hard styles he trained in over the years with a softer, more meditative style.

After completing academic work for a Master of Science degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Brechun has been focusing his attention on the art of teaching Kung Fu, Taiji, and Hapkido in conjunction with physical fitness and researching other disciplines such as jiu-jitsu and muay thai. Over the last several years Brechun has been working closely with sifu Mike Shaw to establish an international organization to develop and spread the unique art of Korean Praying Mantis Kung Fu and thus preserve it for generations to come. Considering himself a martial artist first and engineer second, Brechun strives to maintain a realistic approach and open mind to the martial arts while at the same time preserving the rich tradition, history and philosophy of the masters before him.
